How To Stop Destructive Chewing Habit of your Dog
1. Take control: look after your possessions. Dog proof your home. Dogs use their mouths to explore the world so don\'t go testing their self control. Put your belongings away, make them unavailable. Things to be aware of are can your dog jump, climb and how tall are then when on their back legs? All food must be put away securely, in containers if possible. Don\'t leave scraps of food or dirty plates and cooking pots lying around either.
2. Teach your dog the rules of the house. Then they will know what to expect from you. This could mean confining them somewhere that is dog proof until you are sure they have learnt the rules.
3. Don\'t confuse the dog. Do not let them have access to old clothes, towels or shoes. Dogs do not know the difference between old and new things.
4. Provide alternatives. Go and buy a lot of dog toys. Most dogs\' especially young ones and puppies need to chew. Those toys you bought give them 2 or 3 at a time and rotate them so that the dog does not become bored and remains stimulated by them.
5. Spend lots of time with your dog and be active with them. Dogs need attention so be there with them. Also prevents them getting bored.
6. If you catch them chewing make a noise to distract them like clapping your hands. Remove the item and replace it with something they can chew. Then praise them. This teaches the dog what they can and can not chew.
Bonus advice - maintain a positive attitude.\" Be realistic, you and the dog are not perfect. They will as will you slip up and destructive chewing will occur. When you first get the dog they will be learning your rules so spend a lot of time with them teaching them your rules.
