Chihuahua dog walk training
For the past six weeks I’ve been walk training for a top secret sports project I’m working on — one that you might be reading about in a few weeks.
The goal is to get myself in tip-top physical shape (or as tip-top as a 47-year-old can get without toppling over). Aside from pushups, sit-ups and kicking a soccer ball around in the backyard, Chihuahua Dog walk training spent most of my mornings pounding the pavement with my companion, Nita.
Nita is a 4-pound Chihuahua dogs. I like to walk training her Pequenos Fury (Small Fury) because I like saying the word “pequenos” and she’s a furious little beast.
No squirrel is safe when Nita’s in the neighborhood — although she isn’t so much a dog as a snack for a slightly larger dog.
When my training first began, Nita and I would head out in the neighborhood for a leisurely walk. I tried to travel at a decent pace but Pequenos Fury wanted to go faster, thus putting a strain on the leash and myself.
After a week or so my pace quickened, but still the tiny critter stayed well ahead of me, losing focus only when she needed to take the pause that refreshes. At first I limited the walk to just over a mile, and Nita wasn’t satisfied.
As I’d break away from the road and head for the yard, she’d look up at me as if to say, “Dude, we just got started. Gird ‘em up and let’s roll.”
It’s amazing how much energy a small Chihuahua dog walking — and how irreverent they can be.
As the weeks went by puppy moved from walking to jogging, and this was much more to Nita’s liking. The leash finally had some slack to it, and she was getting a good workout. At that point when I’d end the walk/jog she’d glance at me with a look that said, “Dude, that was pretty good. I think now I’m going in the house to get some water and sleep for about 20 hours.”
After a month and half, however, I’m starting to see a chink in Pequenos Fury’s armor.
These days dogs not just a walk or a jog I go for, but sometimes a run.
The first time I actually started churning my legs Nita freaked out, staring back at me and wildly prancing around. She apparently thought’s I’d lost my mind. And it wasn’t long before we were running side by side.
I finally realized I had leveled the playing field when I tried to run the past the chihuahua house and get in another half mile, only to have the small beast come to a dead stop.
She panted, then stared me down. If she could talk she would’ve said, “Dude … you’re an old man. You’re gonna kill yourself. And frankly, I just want to get some water, grab my stuffed frog and crash for a week.”
Chihuahua Breed, this means I really am getting in shape, so in the not too distant future I can take part in that top secret sports project I told you about.
Just don’t expect Nit to join dogs kennel.
