Big Dog Boxing Club championship
That is the format of the Junior Olympic National Championships, which kicked off Tuesday in Marquette at the Superior Dome on the campus of Northern Michigan University.
Port Huron High School sophomore T.J. Lindsay was the only Big Dog Boxing Club fighter in action Tuesday.
He lost a decision to Rincon George in his 138-pound division match, which ended his bid for a national championship.
"I thought he fought great," Big Dog Boxing Club organizer and lead trainer James Smedley said. "Considering he´s a novice. He´s only been in the gym for six months and he already has 10 fights.
"The kid he was facing has over 100 fights. That showed in the ring."
Today, Port Huron High freshman Valerie Farley will be in action, fighting in the 132-pound division.
"She´s got a good chance," Smedley said. "She´s a strong kid. Our kids are in pretty good shape. They trained really hard. We were at the pool, the beach; we went to other clubs to get sparring. We did what we could to get them ready."
Farley would have to win three fights to win a national championship.
